2008-2009 DIAD Project List

 

Habitat for Humanity - Prep Club Kick Off

 

A celebration of good grades and academic achievement for students who live in Habitat housing.  This event will be held at the end of the first nine weeks and will hopefully entice those students who are not yet members to join in the fun.

 

Homeless Family Center Mural

 

A mural of inspirational words will be painted on the walls of the Homeless Family Center.  Words such as choose, get, keep, healthy living and others will be painted in bright colors for inspiration.

 

Hibiscus House

 

Projects could include a health and wellness day, a sports and fitness day, a reading program or an educational day.

 

UFF Christmas Party

 

An evening set aside for the children and families who provide foster care in Indian River County.  Families are treated to holiday treats, a visit with Santa and presents.  Last year's event was held at the Tara Plantation.  Many thanks to the Grall family!

 

Youth Guidance Outing

 

Volunteers are paired up for a one-on-one adventure with a child who does not yet have a permanent mentor.  Some suggestions for adventures include a trip to the Hallstrom Planetarium, an etiquette lesson and luncheon, a spelling bee or a trip to Harbor Branch.

 

Sun-Up of Indian River Hygeine Night

 

Leagurers will teach the clients of Sun-Up the importance of good hygeine.  From how to use toothpaste to how to clean the counters after cooking.

 

Bike Rodeo 2009

 

In partnership with the Indian River County Sheriff's Office, trained volunteers will fit children and adults with bike helmets donated by the Florida Department of Health.

 

Kids in the Kitchen 2009

 

In conjunction with AJLI, JLIR will once again partner to fight poor childhood nutrition and the trend of childhood obesity.  Projects include proper nutrition and creating a nutritious meal from appetizer to dessert.

 

Indian River Healthy Start Coalition - Thank You, Moms

 

In celebration of Mother's Day, JLIR and Healthy Start will present a luncheon or tea to include a motivational speaker and goodie bags. 

 


 

2007-2008 DIAD Project List

Sports & Nutrition Day @Sun-Up of Indian River, Inc.
Wednesday, November 7 - 6pm - 8pm

JLIR will present information about the food pyramid and portion sizes to a group of 25-30 high-functioning, developmentally-delayed adults.  Participants will make a several healthy snacks as they pass through each food group's station.
 

Youth Guidance Tour of McKee Gardens
Saturday, January 12 - 1pm - 3pm

Twenty children from Youth Guidance will be partnered with a JLIR volunteer for a tour of McKee Gardens.  Each child will be given a disposable camera to capture the birds, flowers, trees and action of the day.  An ice cream social will end the days festivities.

Boys' and Girls' Club Celebrate Valentine's Eve
Wednesday, February 13 - 6pm - 8pm

The ladies of the Boys' and Girls' Club are in for a treat as they create Valentine's Day cards addressed to themselves.  The focus of the evening will be on the beauty of individuality and leading a healthy lifestyle.  The girls will also be making and eating a healthy snack.

Kids in the Kitchen 2008
March 2008

Partnering with The Children's Home Society Girls' Group Home, JLIR will help in the creation of a healthy meal the girls can make together.  The girls will learn about the food pyramid and portion sizes and enjoy the meal they have created.

Bike Helmet Safety Day
April 2008

JLIR, thanks to a donation of 200 bike helmets from the Florida Department of Transportation, has been trained to fit the citizens of Indian River in a bike helmet.  This DIAD project will be more like a rodeo.  

Habitat for Humanity Family Picnic
Saturday, May 3 - 1pm - 3pm

The children of Habitat for Humanity and their families will be entertained with crafts and games at the third annual Habitat for Humanity Family Picnic.  Children will be able to make Mother's Day cards, hunt for buried treasure, get their face painted and a temporary tattoo as well as dance and ride down the water slide.
